“The place I wanted to go most when I got to South Korea was Jeju Island”
From May 16-19 for 4 days and 3 nights, the NGI held the first <Nehemiah Family Camp> on Jeju Island’s University of Nations Jeju campus, where 40 North Korean refugees, their children and volunteers and staff gathered under the theme “The Seed of Revival.”
Early in the morning on the day of departure, North Korean defectors gathered at Gimpo Airport looking excited. The faces of the North Korean refugees on the flight to Jeju seemed full of anticipation. We could hear laughter from the children of North Korean defectors everywhere.
The purpose of this camp was to give North Korean refugees time to heal physically and mentally in the beautiful natural environment of Jeju Island, to meet the Lord through lectures and services in the morning and evening, and to recover in their spirits. In particular, missionary Elijah's lecture "Restoration of Relations" was for North Korean refugees to apply directly to their homes and workplaces. Right at that evening, a North Korean refugees mother and her 13-year-old son had a quarrel. She was mad, but suppressed herself remembering what she learned during the lecture.
Although it rained all three days, we had time to tour around Jeju Island during the day. We visited Abu Oreum, Hamdeok Beach, Jeju National Museum and Dongmun Market. We also had Jeju Island's local dishes such as black pork, raw fish noodles, sea urchin noodles, abalone porridge, and gulfweed soup. A delicious meal was followed by a close meaningful fellowship between the North Korean refugees and South Koreans.
On the evening of the last day of camp, through God's amazing grace, 10 out of 24 North Korean refugees accepted Jesus Christ.
