NEHEMIAH ENGLISH SCHOOL (NES)

One of the most difficult things for North Korean refugees to accomplish, in addition to adjusting to life and culture in South Korean society, is learning English. English proficiency in South Korea is presently estimated to be 56%, and is very closely tied to job opportunities and economic stability. With this in mind, learning English is very important to the growth and success of North Korean refugees who have resettled in South Korea.

Through our Nehemiah English School (NES) program, we are able to provide personalized English education, test preparation, assistance with university admissions, and job preparation based on their needs and skill level. Our curriculum focuses on English grammar, English conversation with native speakers, and a listening class to improve comprehension.

Over the past several months we have been blessed to have interns from the University of Chicago lead our classes. Their leadership and instruction has helped provide practical English skills to our North Korea students, providing them with skills to adjust to South Korean society, grow into future leaders, and dream beyond their current borders via opportunities to study abroad.

Students aren’t the only ones benefiting from our program. Our teachers continue to walk away from each class filled and inspired. Both the teachers and students are learning and expanding their understanding of each other, as well as reaching for the same dream of reunification, together.

If you would like to volunteer in the NES program, please apply through ENGLISH TEACHING on the NGI website.
