HANAWON VISIT

Written by Restore Ministry team

Every other month our NGI staff drives to Hanawon, a government-funded agency where North Korean refugees receive three months of education, assistance with emotional stability, cultural heterogeneity, social and economic motivation, and assistance with adjusting to South Korean society. Individuals are accepted into this program after being investigated by National Intelligence Agency under the Korean government.

Individuals arrive without family or friends, and oftentimes struggle with feelings of isolation and sorrow, especially after the interview process. The women that we visit in Hanawon have been rescued by the Nehemiah Relief Fund. They are dear to our hearts, and our primary goal is to create a personal connection with them so that they have a home base to come to when they leave the program. This is the heart of our Restore ministry. Through care, personal commitment, and visits, we welcome them into the family of God that unites us.

We would like to introduce you to two of sisters from Hanawon:

Yeonjung, From suffering to Faith

Yeonjung was forced into marriage with a Chinese man. Through this forced marriage, she gave birth to two babies. However, after 16 years of abuse and beatings, we she had to flee to save her life. Yeonjung was one of 10 sisters rescued by generous partners in NRF.

In China, she used to attend church. And, by the grace of God, she has been reading the Bible and praying to God daily despite the various difficulties she has encountered coming to South Korea. NGI has been deeply touched by Yeonjung committing herself to the Lord and beginning a new life in him.

Recently, we heard the good news that she found a new place to stay near the NGI office. We ask all of our partners to pray for Yeonjung so that she will continue to walk with God with the power of the Holy Spirit.

Jeongsim, a passionate girl

Jeongsim took a great risk when she crossed Tumen river near North Korea. She is just 24 years of age, but courageous beyond her years. Jeongsim has a passion for learning about foreign countries and learning English. As a result of our relationship with Jeongsim, she was able to participate in NERC as a student, and regularly comes to NGI for English lessons. Through her work and dedication to her future, she has attended English class every week and can now confidently communicate with native English speakers.

She now faces the next step in her journey where she is preparing to enter a college in Seoul. She is studying day and night, and even though she is little older than average college students, she is passionate to achieve her goals.

She attends the church where one of the NGI staff goes every Sunday, and continue to grow more and more every day.

If you are interested in volunteering as an English mentor and encouragement for North Korean friends like Jeongsim, please apply through our Skill Contribution on the NGI website, or write to us anytime at [email protected].
