[4th Nehemiah Scholarship Fund] Please hold Suhee's hands!
"In South Korea, God gave me a dream"

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, I am Kenneth Bae

We are deeply grateful for the warmth of our sponsors, who have been by our side through continuous prayers and financial support for the North Korean refugees.

It is an honor to introduce Suhee Lee, a recipient of the 4th Nehemiah Scholarship.

NGI is raising and providing scholarship funds for North Korean refugee students without families or relatives in South Korea. Currently, NGI offers monthly living expenses and scholarships to 3 North Korean refugee students (two college students and one seminary student.) We want to create a way for students who experience financial hardships to focus on their studies. We believe that they will be the leaders of a unified generation like Nehemiah, who embodies both spirituality and intelligence.

Hello, $%name%$,I'm Lee Suhee from North Hamgyong Province.

At the age of 14, my mother died and I felt as if the sky were falling. I was the breadwinner and served as the head of my household, but I escaped to China in my early 20s because I could not endure the continuous hardships of life in North Korea. However, life in China has not been easy even though I’ve lived there for over a decade. I lived in fear of being repatriated to North Korea if a government official discovered that I was a  defector. I hardly spoke to anyone in the first few years because my Chinese was poor.

Whenever I was having a hard time, I would look at the only picture I had of my mother, remembering what it was like to hold her in my arms and cry. As time went on, my Chinese gradually improved. However, I was always anxious and frightened by the thought that my status as a defector was to be discovered and that I would never see my beloved son again if I were repatriated to North Korea.

[After arriving in Korea, I brought my son, Hyunsoo]

One day, I heard the gospel in Thailand while I was on my way to Korea through a pastor who was working on a rescue mission for North Korean refugees. It was there I accepted the Lord as my Savior.

When I first met God, I cried as if my mother was in front of me. I told Father God all the hardships and trials I had gone through.

Upon hearing the pastor’s words, 'you are a precious daughter of God,'  my cold and broken heart softened, and I rediscovered the laughter I had lost.

After hearing the words, "cast all your anxieties on the Lord, for he takes care of you," I was reassured knowing that Heavenly Father was always behind me. Experiencing such joy moved me so much that I wanted to share God with other North Korean refugees who had challenging lives like me in the refugee camps in Thailand. Because they also wanted to meet God and experience happiness together, I shared the word of God while distributing the Bible. Now, as I worship in Korea, God tells me, "I am lighting up your path, so now you just walk confidently."

I have a second life because of God. For the first time, I have a will and reason to live.

After graduating from Hanawon, I gained an internship at the Seoul Agricultural and Fisheries Food Corporation with the recommendation of the Hana Center teacher. I worked in the Planning/PR team. Through this process, I became interested in distributing agricultural products and dreamed of establishing my own company.

"I have never had a proper dream in my entire life up to this point.
In North Korea, it was a dream to eat until I felt full. In China, it was a dream not to be sent back to North Korea.
God gave me a new dream and I decided to go to college to make my dream a reality."

On weekdays I prepared for work and college entrance exams and on weekends I volunteered. After applying for college, I was admitted to Ewha Women's University Department of Business Administration. Although I was accepted and decided to attend, I still had concerns about the cost of living. But as always, I prayed to God, my Father.

My dream is to increase value and consumer satisfaction from agricultural products made by diligent producers by operating the best agricultural and marine products distribution company. To achieve this, I will study hard for four years in college to broaden my management knowledge. Starting from the second semester of freshman year, students enroll in intensive accounting and marketing courses. Based on the performance in these classes, students will prepare for starting a business. I plan to participate in the start-up support program at school, where students can meet seniors who have started their own businesses after graduating from school. I hope to accumulate information about the world of entrepreneurship through their experiences and advice.

Currently, I attend the Christian Club (Visionary) at the university every Friday evening for Bible study and attend church every Sunday. At the end of the day, no matter how successful I am socially and economically, there is no joy without God. After graduation, I plan to work at the Garak Market for about two years and gain experience in the agricultural trade field. I will also visit agricultural production areas to promote my platform and secure business partners for producers. And I will create an e-commerce network that connects farmers and consumers simultaneously.

Ultimately, after the unification of Korea, I want to use the management skills I honed through my experiences and education in South Korea to cultivate and collaborate with entrepreneurs who can rebuild the collapsing North Korean economy. I want to nurture my team as people rooted in God, not as people who only pursue money. I will do my best to make this God-given dream come true and proceed with prayer.

Ms. Suhee Lee’s relationship with NGI started five years ago, right when the NGI first began. She has experienced the process of escaping with her son, settling into a new home, and all the sorrow and joy of working diligently and beginning college this year. NGI hopes Suhee will become a mature and healthy child of God in Korea.

Please hold her hand and uplift Suhee

so she can become a healthy Nehemiah of this generation!

In addition to Lee Suhee, NGI is providing scholarships for three recipients selected for the 3rd Nehemiah Scholarship in 2021 to continue their studies.
